Reblogged from hatecation, but also saw it on theChive.

American Gods

American Gods

American Gods by Neil Gaiman is a great read. A fairly hefty book it follows Shadow on the days following his release from prison. Expecting to go back to a nice quiet life with his wife, things don’t go to plan and instead he finds himself working for the strange and dangerous Wednesday who may or may not be a God.

It’s a fun read for anyone with interest in Mythology and personally it was great to get back into reading after being absent for way too long. The text linked above is Neil’s preferred version. And I’d start reading soon because they’re working on a TV series that will no doubt be awesome.

Cookie cutters

Last week I ordered a substantial amount of baking supplies after being inspired by bakerella.com (check her out). The first batch arrived today, and I can not wait to make me some dinosaur cookies. There’s something about baking that really appeals to me - and I don’t think I’m alone. Yes the food is delicious, but it’s the process that rocks. Measuring the ingredients stirring it up and then sampling the results. It’s not like cooking where you can correct as you go. With baking it’s fire and forget. Also, it’s the food :)

First meal in le creuset. Yum.

BBC News

I just watched the best BBC report I’ve seen in a long time. Watching them describe the snow storms in the US with a vigour that put Brian Blessid to shame, the reporter seemed to wallow in the reversal of fortune as many were trapped in the north east.

Not without merit though, Thunder Snow?!? Where did that come from? Surely that’s a sign that Odin’s coming?

Merry Christmas

Having just arrived back from beautiful cold new York to cold dark London it seems it’s Christmas already. Not sure when that happened, but it has got me thinking about traditions. My family is not big on traditions however I’ve been fortunate enough to share my christmas with a family that does. Their traditions are nothing out of the ordinary - and yet, for me, they seem alien, unfathomable and absolutely wonderful.

The season kicks off with Christmas music and egg nog, followed by family feasts, ritual presents (socks and pants - necessary and awesome) but the real difference is the atmosphere.

Christmas at mine is a high pressure situation complete with the same arguing and faux busieness of the year before (and the 26 before that). There is a strong focus on present buying, something which I’ve never enjoyed. Although I love giving presents, the idea of cost entering into it so takes away from what it means to give a gift that I can’t enjoy it. If presents were sex, christmas would be a one night stand.

So how to conquer this? Well, i’m going to take results as causation, in the hope that a few nice traditions will foster the spirit of goodwill and cheer that I think we all want. As well as taking from my one time adoptive family, i also plan on stealing from tv shows (pajamas the night before - thanks modern family) and coming up with a few of my own. Then by shear brute force I’ll ram these into being. I’m sure traditions aren’t meant to be stolen, but hey, if the alternative is another Christmas sat in front of the tv watching trash followed by a morning unwrapping generic gifts, I think I know which route I’ll take.

Merry Christmas all and if anyone out there in the inter web feels like contributing their Christmas traditions I’m all ears.

Zombies

So there are a lot of cool Zombie things out there.

I’d suggest reading the Walking Dead trade paper back (collected anthology of individual comics), the Z-Wars and watching 28 Days later and Zombieland.

There’s also Zprepared

Joni Mitchell

Thank God for Joni Mitchell. It’s a lot easier to be the aspirational Me that I think we all have when I’m listening to her voice. I feel cool just listening.

Mint and honey tea, some much neglected reading, a cold, grey, wet, Guy Fawkes night and Joni. It’s all going to be all right.

Yum

Gaucomole I love you.
